18 Entryway Organization Ideas

Get your home’s entryway ready for summer activities with these entryway organization ideas.

18 Entryway Organization Ideas

The entryway is one of the most important spaces in a home, but one we spend little effort organizing. A well-organized entryway is worth the effort, though. And now is the perfect time to make it happen. If you’re unsure where to start, we’ve got some great entryway organization ideas to serve as your inspiration.

Summer is almost here. Back and forth from hikes, kids’ sporting events, bike rides, and beach trips. The entryway to your home quickly becomes a dumping ground for cast off shoes, baseball gloves, bags and backpacks. Your first emotion when walking through the door should be happiness to be home, not stress at the mess confronting you. Plus, as we move into the post-pandemic world, you’ll want your guests to be able to get a great first impression when they enter your home again.

Get a jump start on the chaos by setting your home’s entryway up for success with these easy entryway organization ideas.

  • A great starting place for entryway organization ideas, a credenza, console or long table in the entryway offers tons of storage space, while adding depth and warmth to the space.
  • Provide a basket of slippers to guests so that they are encouraged to take off their shoes instead of tracking dirt through the house.
  • Benches create an additional surface for storage, as well as a place to sit while taking shoes on and off.

An entryway bench is functional and can help create a welcoming and cozy space
  • Here’s a project for the DIY-ers. Turn a non-functional storage closet into a cute and functional storage nook.
  • Baskets are a must in any organized entryway. Use larger baskets placed on the floor for shoe storage. Smaller baskets hold sunglasses, keys, and hats (we have one by the front door for masks currently). The best thing about storage baskets is that they add to the décor rather than detracting from it, unlike some styles of plastic organizers.
  • An entryway organizing tip I use all the time is having a designated catch-all plate or bowl for keys, wallets, and other small items that tend to get lost.

  • A boot tray is a necessary entryway item in the PNW. Even in the summer the weather can get wet. A boot tray keeps all the mud and puddles in one place, rather than spread all over the floor.
  • Use floating shelves to either increase storage space or for décor. If you have a bright entryway, consider a few live plants to bring some freshness into the space.
  • Utilize the space under cabinets or benches for storage by placing organizers under them, or even more baskets.
  • I love this entryway organization tip: Place hooks inside cabinet or console doors to create even more space.
  • Double your hanging space inside your entryway closet with a closet rod extender.
  • This might seem too obvious, but plenty of hooks on the walls are a great organizational idea. Give family and friends a place to hang their hats, coats, and other outdoor accessories, rather than draping them over chairs. Or dropping them on the ground. Wall hooks in the entryway are also more accessible than those tucked away in a closet–and therefore more likely to be used.

  • Try lockers as organizational units. Lockers can create a fun vibe in an entryway space. These are especially great for families in which everyone needs to keep their equipment separate yet easily accessible.
  • If you don’t want to invest in a set of lockers (or the aesthetics aren’t working for you), give each member of the family a sturdy metal or wooden bin. They can store sports equipment, work bags, and other supplies while they’re at home. Better yet if the bins can be tucked underneath a bench to minimize an appearance of clutter.
  • Digging the lockers idea but want something slightly different? You can convert inexpensive Ikea bookshelves into “lockers” and create highly effective individual spaces for your family to store their belongings. Great for people who love a bit of a project.
  • Install wall-mounted spice racks in your entryway or entryway closet to hold mail or school notebooks.
  • Create a wall-mounted mail organizer with a few magazine holders. Some DIY involved, but very simple overall.
  • Use a mirror to open up the space. If you have a small entryway, a large mirror creates the illusion of more light and space.

A large mirror adds dimension and light to a space–almost as good as a window

After you’ve used these entryway organization tips to get a beautifully organized entryway, reach out to your team here at Clean & Simple the keep the space sparkling!

CLEANING TIPS

Outdoor Spring Cleaning

It’s spring! And as the sun shows itself more and more, you will want to start spending more time outdoors, on the porch or in your yard. Which means it’s also time to get the outside of your home summer-ready.  Spring cleaning is not just for the inside of your home. Spring cleaning for outside your home is also important for the general maintenance of your home and will help prevent damage over time.

We put together this guide with 7 essential tasks to keep your home exterior clean and well-maintained.

  • Clean exterior windows. You should first tackle your windows.  Check your screens for any holes or damage. Then, repair or replace it as needed. If the conditions of your screens are good, take them off and gentle rinse outside with a hose.  You can gently rub them with a soft brush. Then, use some soapy water if needed.  Clean the outside of glass windows before inside—this will help you see dirt and smudges more easily.

  • Clean your gutters. Yes, this is the worst task. But cleaning your gutters is an essential part of spring cleaning the outside of your home. Cleaning your gutters regularly will lessen your chance of water damage.  Use a stable ladder to climb up and remove all leaves, twigs, and other debris that has made its way into your gutters.  Make sure to wear gloves for protection and consider using some sort of a scoop.

  • Repaint shutters, trim, and doors. Take a look at your shutters, trim, and doors and decide if they need to be freshened up. Winter weather can take a toll on paint jobs.  Consider a bold new color or adding new light fixtures or a new mailbox to help increase the curb appeal of your home.  Make sure to check with your homeowner’s association if applicable before major changes or additions are done.

  • Clean the garage. Tackling your garage may be a big project but will make a big difference once complete.  Organize your garage by assigning zones for different types of storage and/or uses.  Install cabinets, shelves, or hooks to help store things efficiently and make sure to get rid of anything you no longer need or use.

  • Clean the porch/patio. Sitting on the patio on a warm spring evening is the best, but not so much when there are cobwebs in all the corners and the patio furniture is dusty and grimy. Sweep away dirt and cobwebs and wipe down patio furniture to freshen up your outdoor space (by the way, you can add cleaning the patio as an optional service on a one time or a recurring basis, if you are a Clean & Simple customer!)

  • Wash exterior walls. All throughout the long and wet Pacific Northwest winter, your exterior walls have been splashed with rain and mud. Use a pressure washer or even a regular hose with a jet attachment to clean of exterior walls and siding. Pay special attention to the areas bordered by plants and trees. Regular cleaning helps to improve the longevity of your walls.

  • Clean outdoor grill/kitchen area. If it’s been a while since you’ve used your grill or barbeque, don’t forget to scrub it as part of your outdoor spring cleaning routine. You’ll want it to be nice and clean before you use it again.

Spring cleaning isn’t just for the inside of your home, but the outside as well.  Spring is the perfect time to give the outside of your home a bit of love and attention. Moreover, it will help you get ready to enjoy the warmer weather and summer fun. And while you’re focusing your time and energy on the outside of your home, Clean & Simple can help with the inside with our deep cleaning or recurring cleaning services.

CLEANING TIPS GREEN HOUSEKEEPING

Dish Soap and Warm Water: The Backbone of Any Cleaner’s Arsenal

If you asked any of our technicians what the most-used product in their cleaning caddy is, we can almost guarantee that their answer will be dish soap. This unlikely answer is due to dish soap’s versatility and gentleness. Dish soap is safe to use on almost any surface and is more environmentally friendly than a lot of other common household cleaners.

Dish soap is a surprisingly green cleaning product

One of the many reasons we love cleaning with dish soap is because it is naturally an environmentally-friendly product. Dish soaps used to contain phosphates, which can pose an environmental hazard. When phosphates get into lakes and streams, they can trigger algal blooms which reduce the oxygen levels in the water. Luckily, phosphates have been eliminated from most major brands of dish soaps.

If you’re buying a dish soap for its environmentally-friendly benefits, it’s important to note that some brands do still contain triclosan, an antibacterial ingredient. When triclosan gets into the environment, it can break down in dioxins which are taken up by plants. The main concern about triclosan in soaps is that it might inhibit microbial breakdown of wastes at processing plants. Clean & Simple’s choice for dish soap, Ivory, contains neither phosphates nor triclosan.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://cleanandsimplecleaning.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/6597m-1.jpg” alt=”cleaning counter with dish soap” title_text=”6597m” _builder_version=”4.23″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Dish soap does not have a strong chemical scents

Another reason we love cleaning with dish soap is because it’s powerful but it doesn’t leave a strong chemical scent lingering in the homes and offices we service. One of the biggest special requests we get from our customers is to use products that don’t have a strong smell. Heavy artificial fragrances can cause headaches and breathing problems for both humans and pets. When it comes to tackling grease especially, many effective degreasers also have strong artificial fragrances. Not so with most dish soaps, which tend to be more mild in scent, while still packing a degreasing punch.

Dish soap is safe to use on many surfaces, but still highly effective

Dish soap is safe to use on many surfaces: granite, marble, sealed wood, ceramic, and more. That’s because most mild dish soaps have a pH of 7 or 8, which is more or less neutral. Most other cleaners, like glass cleaners and all purpose cleaners, are either acidic or alkaline, which makes them riskier to use on easily damaged surfaces like marble that are susceptible to staining and etching.

Even though dish soap is gentle, it is still a highly effective cleaner. One of the first steps our technicians are trained to take when they start cleaning a kitchen or bathroom is to make a soapy water bucket. They will turn to this all-purpose tool throughout the cleaning process. Dish soap is designed to cut through food grease, which makes it a natural choice for cleaning kitchen surfaces—strong enough for removing stubborn grease from stove tops and microwaves, while remaining safe for granite or marble countertops and stainless steel appliance fronts. Dish soap is also incredibly useful in the bathroom. We use it to tackle soap scum in tubs and showers, to wash out porcelain sinks, to wipe down counters, and to scrub tile and linoleum floors.

7 unexpected uses for dish soap in your home

Beyond being a great cleaning product for all your standard cleaning needs, dish soap can also be really useful in other tasks (and even for some fun with the kids). We’ve put together a list of seven of our favorite unusual dish soap uses.

  1. Shine up jewelry. A drop or two of dish soap mixed with seltzer water makes for an effective cleaning solution to shine up grimy jewelry. Just drop your jewelry into the mix for five minutes and then remove (you can use a clean toothbrush to gently scrub particularly dirty jewelry)
  2. Remove oil stains from the concrete floors. Dish soap is also effective for removing oil stains from concrete floors in the garage, or even the driveway. Just cover the stain with a layer of baking soda, then a layer of dish soap. After letting it sit for several hours, scrub the spot with a strong-bristled scrub brush.
  3. Keep bugs off your plants. Make a highly effective plant spray for both indoor and outdoor plants with dish soap. Mix 1 cup of safflower or sunflower oil (helps the spray stick to the plant’s leaves) with 1 cup of water and 2 tablespoons of dish soap in a spray bottle. Tip: test your spray on a small part of the plant to make sure it is not harmful to the plant. In general, dish soap spray is safe to use on most plants.
  4. Remove oil & grease from delicate fabrics. Remove oil and grease stains from delicate wool and silk fabrics using hot water and dish soap. Use 1 tablespoon of soap to a gallon of hot water. Submerge the garment and scrub the stain gently.
  5. A camping essential. Bring a small bottle on camping trips for all your cleaning needs—including personal grooming! Dish soap is so gentle it is safe to use as a shampoo and bodywash substitute in times of need.
  6. Make bubbles. Need a break from cleaning? Make super bubbles! This is a great activity to do with kids. Pour 1 cup of dish soap into 6 cups of (preferably distilled) water. Stir carefully to avoid creating bubbles. Next add ¼ cup of corn syrup and stir again. Put a lid on your container and let the solution sit overnight (this yields stronger bubbles).
  7. Remove stickers without leaving the sticky residue. Use dish soap to remove stickers and sticker residue. Cover the sticker with dish soap and let it sit for five minutes. The sticker should slide right off, though you can also use a scrub brush and hot water for more stubborn stickers.

If you really want to see what a difference simple dish soap can make in your home, give Clean and Simple Cleaning™ a call. Dish soap is one of many tools we use every day to keep our clients’ homes bright, shining, and free of grime and dirt. We have refined and improved our cleaning process over decades of careful training and improvement. We are here to help and can’t wait to hear from you.

A Clean Home with a Dog: 6 Foolproof Tips

So your cute pandemic puppy is now a messy dog

The 2020 puppy boom

At the beginning of the pandemic, when metropolitan areas began to enter shutdowns and many non-essential employees were asked to work from home, people started adopting dogs. Many shelters, rescues, and breeders reported more demand than they had dogs and puppies to fill. Back in August of 2020, many breeders had waiting lists extending into 2021.

IMG 2012 editedWhy we love pets

Creating a connection with a pet can be very fulfilling and studies have shown that having a pet comes with a variety of health benefits. Many of these benefits aligned with needs created by the unique conditions of the pandemic. Just a few of the ways a pet can make us healthier:

  • Companionship. Many single adults turned to adopting a pet during the pandemic because they couldn’t spend time around other humans. Having a pet helped to stave off the loneliness of isolation.
  • Routine. No one keeps you to your routine better than a pet who needs to be walked and fed and played with at precise times each day. If you’re distracted or running late, your pet will be sure to get your attention. Since the pandemic upended many of our daily routines, from work to school to weekend activities and working out, having a pet helped people maintain a semblance of routine and create structure in an otherwise unstructured day.
  • Purpose. Having a pet is a serious responsibility. For many people, this sense of purpose can be extremely valuable on its own and has been shown to help ease anxiety and depression. Caring for a pet also helps to teach young children responsibility.
  • More exercise. Daily walks are a great source of exercise, and your dog will thank you for it. Energetic dog breeds like border collies often benefit from regular runs and can be a powerful motivation if you need one to meet your running goals. Cats love to play daily and many cats can be leash-trained and enjoy walking and exploring outdoors. Beyond the benefits of exercise, it’s also beneficial to spend time outdoors, in the sunshine and fresh air.
  • Lower blood pressure. Studies have shown that pet owners tend to reduce your risk for heart disease. That’s not just because of the extra exercise opportunities—sitting and petting your dog or cat lowers your blood pressure and pulse rate.

You probably already know all of this. You love your pet and you’re so glad they’re a part of your life. But that cute, chubby little puppy is now a full-grown dog. And kind of a mess.

Puppies are messy in their own way, but usually that mess can be contained within a fairly small area. Most dogs are much less containable. They track dirt, mud and leaves in from outside, all over the wood floors and the carpet. When they eat, they send food flying. Getting a drink of water inevitably ends with half the water on the floor. They leave drool spots all over the floors and hair all over the furniture. And more hair on the floors. Really, the floors are just a dog-created disaster all around.

No matter how clean you are, having a dog forces you to change your cleaning routine. You must clean more frequently, and with more attention to certain areas than you might have before. It’s more work to keep a tidy household with a full-grown dog in it. We do it because all the benefits outweigh all the mess. Still, it can be hard work keeping your home clean with a dog.

6 tips for a clean home with a messy dog

If there’s anything Clean & Simple understands, it’s the importance of a clean and healthy home. We also love our furry friends. We’ve put together this pet-approved list of tips for keeping the dirt and fur from overwhelming your home.

  • Regular grooming. One of the perennial pet owner complaints is all the fur—the tumbleweeds of hair that roll along the baseboards or the upholstered couch that used to be white but now is whatever color the dog is. Regular grooming can cut down on shedding significantly. You don’t need to go to a professional groomer, just brush your dog a few times each week. This can also be great fun for your dog and help you bond. Brush outside if you can, to reduce skin particles in the home that can contribute to allergies. Regular bathing is also essential in minimizing the “dog smell.” A clean dog is a crucial component in a clean home with a dog!
  • Wipe down muddy paws before they come into the house. Try to keep a towel and possibly even a shallow tub of water near the door to wipe down paws as your dog comes in from the backyard or a recent walk. My parents’ black lab is an expert at slinging mud all over herself on a walk, so they always have multiple towels set out to wipe her down after each walk.
  • Exercise your dog regularly. Don’t skimp on the walks—a bored dog is a destructive dog. Take your dog on regular walks (or runs, depending on the breed). Give them enrichment toys while they’re hanging out around the house or outside to keep them focused on constructive fun, i.e., not tearing the stuffing out of the pillows or bulbs out of the garden.
IMG 3387 edited
  • Use a placemat under your pet’s dish. Preferably a placemat that can be easily wiped down with soap and water, or a small mat or rug you can throw into the washing machine with a load of towels once a week. This will help to reduce the food and water splatter. While we’re on the subject, use stainless steel or nonporous silicone food and water dishes for your dog’s food. Porous materials like many plastics can harbor bacteria that might harm your pet.
  • Vacuum as much as possible. There’s no way around it. Even if you are brushing your dog and wiping their feet, there is still going to be pet hair and dirt in the house. It’s inevitable. The more you vacuum, the better things are. We recommend households with pets to vacuum the whole house at least once a week, with higher traffic areas vacuumed more frequently. If you have multiple pets, or pets and kids, you might need to do a full-house vacuum twice a week. It’s a lot of work, but it will make a huge difference.

It is possible to get control of your home back from your messy dog. Just follow our simple steps. And if you want to free up the time you spend vacuuming every week to play with your dog instead, we’re standing by to help.

EMPLOYEES HOUSE CLEANING SERVICE

Beginning A Career As A Professional House Cleaner

Beginning a Professional Cleaning Career

The cleaning industry attracts employees from a diverse array of backgrounds. Some people come through our doors with expert cleaning skills and little education or life experience. Others come with great work ethic and no experience of what it means to be a professional cleaner, aside from the picture in the job post and a vague concept of a “maid” provided by stereotypical Hollywood portrayals.  Some employees are seeking a career they can commit to and grow in. Others are looking for a place where they can experience support and belonging while they work to move on to the next stage in their journey. All are welcome at Clean & Simple. All we ask is that they are ready to work hard.

Each person who walks through the doors of Clean & Simple is given an opportunity.  An opportunity to build a schedule that works for their lives. An opportunity to meet a variety of people and work in some spectacular homes (and some not so clean homes!). Professional cleaning can be overwhelming for anyone new to the industry. So can starting a new job with a new company.

That’s why we start each employee in a comprehensive, fully paid training program, regardless of their experience level. Our training program is based on mentorship and employee advocacy. Each new employee is a member of the team, with something to contribute right off the bat—even if they’ve never cleaned professionally before. Everyone is starting from the same place as far as learning the Clean & Simple method and style. This article is meant to give you an idea of what your first few weeks at Clean & Simple look like.

The Clean & Simple Family

The term “work family” has received some negative press in recent years. However, to us at Clean & Simple, work family just means two things: 1) that management’s number one role is supporting our employees and enabling each employee’s success and 2) that work can and should be fun! Does this mean you’ll have fun at your cleaning job every second of every day? Of course not. However, that doesn’t mean you won’t have fun a lot of the time.

First, you get to spend each day traveling to different places and seeing different homes and people. You’ll meet all sorts of different pets. If you’re an animal lover, it is a special treat to be greeted by a customer’s enthusiastic dogs, or to play with a cat who is fascinated by your dusting cloth. Many of our cleaners develop meaningful relationships with their long-term customers and become an important part of that customer’s week or month. Each day brings a new adventure—you’re not just sitting behind a desk making phone calls or staring at a screen. You get to be active and dynamic while creating a wonderful professional cleaning experience for the clients whose homes you service.

Second, you’ll build professional and friendly relationships with wonderful coworkers. While some of our cleaners work primarily or exclusively solo, many jobs require a team effort. Working in a team makes the day go by even faster. While you won’t spend much time chatting with your coworker while on the job, our cleaners still enjoy the opportunity to interact with another cleaner throughout their day. An old trainer of mine would keep things interesting by initiating mini floor-cleaning competitions, in which we would start at opposites ends of the room and see who could reach the middle first, without missing any stray debris on the way (I always lost, but it was also always a good time, especially when I was lagging towards the end of a long day).

Finally, management at Clean & Simple amplifies the fun with regular quarterly competitions, light-hearted weekly meetings, end of month parties, and lots of opportunities to win prizes outside of the merit-based bonus structure. At weekly meetings and end of month parties we select employees who have gone above and beyond in some way that week or month (helping a coworker, receiving glowing praise from a customer, giving a new employee a hand) and they get a chance to spin a wheel to win a prize. We frequently provide a free breakfast or other treats at end of month parties, and frequently play games and icebreakers to give everyone a chance to relax and interact with each other. We also love to provide optional out of work activities for employees to participate in, such as bowling nights, picnics in the summer, and holiday parties.

“Clean & Simple is family” means management and your coworkers have your back. It means this is a place where you will be supported as you learn and grow. And it means that work is what we make of it—and we choose to make it something we enjoy.

Starting your journey with Clean & Simple Cleaning

We want to start off new employees, no matter their experience level, on the best foot possible. This requires an intensive, nearly three-week training period. During a new technician’s training, you will receive close one-on-one attention both from office staff guiding you through policies and procedures, as well as one or more of our friendly trainers who will work with you in the field and show you the ropes of professional cleaning.

Office orientation

Your onboarding journey with our company begins with an orientation. Orientations usually take 2-4 hours. You are introduced to the basics of professional cleaning through industry training videos. You will also receive a one-on-one explanation of policies and procedures and some basic guidelines to what to expect from the job from a dedicated office staff member.

Orientation is the foundational moment of a new employee’s experience, and everything you learn from that point forward will be built on this foundation. This is a great time to ask questions about the job, company culture, and expectations of employees. We’re a small company with a small office staff, which gives us an opportunity to form personal relationships with each of our cleaning technicians. No anonymous corporate bosses at Clean & Simple. You’ll meet the whole company within a few weeks of starting.

Training in the field

The bulk of the training process is hands-on training in the field with one of our experienced trainers. Our trainers are specially chosen for their experience, skill, and dedication. In-field, supervised training usually takes place over a two-week period, though in some cases new technicians find they benefit from additional time in training. Intensive training is so important because professional cleaning is challenging—this is no cakewalk!

Getting prepared for a physically demanding job

We’re transparent about the work we do. We’re not looking to paint a pretty picture.  Cleaning professionally is labor-intensive.  Professional cleaning is hard work!  It’s not like cleaning your own home—there are rigorous quality standards to maintain, and our technicians often tackle 3-4 different jobs every day. We want you to be mentally prepared to tackle your training period like you might train for a marathon. You’re getting your body in shape to handle a physically demanding and repetitive task.

The first week is truly a test. It’s like going to the gym without having worked out in a year and getting on the treadmill to try to sprint out a 5K or 10K and not lose your breath!  It takes time in training to learn the job and the routines while adapting to the fitness level of cleaning over eight thousand square feet of houses on any given route.  One of the most important parts of the first week of your training is giving you the tools to build up your cleaning “muscles” so that you can work safely and efficiently later.

Learning how to provide excellent customer service

In your first week, you’re also learning how to take equipment and supplies in and out of the vehicles, meet and greet customers and pets, and navigate between jobs.

Your trainer will show you how to read and follow a work order, how to enter and lock up a home or office, how to interact with customers, and how to create a consistently excellent customer experience in every single one of our clients’ unique homes.

You’ll find that every home or office you service presents unique demands and requirements. Some of those will be readily noticeable in the work order, but some may be a function of the home’s layout, or the way in which the family uses the space. At some jobs you will find yourself working around the whole family as they go about their days working and studying. Other times, you might go to the same home many times and never once meet the customers themselves. You might exchange regular notes with a customer or communicate rarely if ever. Certain customers might follow you around the house to chat, while others might shut themselves in their office and avoid you while you work. At first, you’ll have to follow your trainer’s cue to know how to interact with a customer. However, you’ll find you quickly pick up on a customer’s expectations, even if you’ve never been to a home before, just based on the first five minutes of your initial interaction.

One of the reasons professional house cleaning is such a demanding job is because cleaning technicians are expected to perform a detailed and physically intensive task while simultaneously exhibiting superb customer service skills. Most other physically demanding work doesn’t come with a strong customer service component. As a professional house cleaner, you’ll learn how to interact with customers in a way that makes them feel cared for, while at the same time ensuring you are completing the tasks assigned and not going beyond the scope of what the company has been hired to do.

Learning and growing with coworkers

An important component of your first few weeks at Clean & Simple Cleaning is woven throughout your experience—meeting and spending time with your new coworkers! One of your most valuable resources as you learn about professional house cleaning is your fellow cleaning technicians. Aside from regular staff meetings, you’ll also have opportunities to interact with coworkers in the mornings when you come to the office to pick up supplies. While your trainer or an office manager should be your primary source if you have questions about the job, all your coworkers are happy to help show you around the office or assist with basic questions about equipment and supplies.

While our team of house cleaners enjoys friendly competition, at the end of the day we all know that the company is only as strong as our weakest cleaner. Therefore, we all like to work together to put our best foot forward. There is no point in hoarding cleaning tips or advice, because the better the whole team is, the better the company does overall.

At Clean & Simple, you might be assigned a few regular customers. However, most of your daily assigned jobs will be shared with other technicians. Part of creating a positive experience for all your customers includes helping your coworkers to be just as good as you are. This is what we mean when we talk about and Clean & Simple “family”—that we’re all in this together, working towards the same goal.

Professional cleaning as a career

Finally, Clean & Simple designed the cleaning technician entry-level position to meet a variety of employee needs, from those looking for temporary, part-time work while attending school, to those who are looking for a long-term career, and many paths in between. To this end, Clean & Simple offers flexible scheduling, job growth and advancement opportunities, on the job training in a variety of different office responsibilities, and more.

Cleaning technicians grow into trainers, field managers, and office managers. Cleaning technicians have used their job to support passions in art or music. From their positions as house cleaners, employees have gone on to start their own businesses, to complete college degrees, to attend graduate and law schools, and more. A cleaning technician job is a starting point to many paths; an opportunity to grow and learn and to support yourself doing work that makes a measurable difference in people’s lives.

HOUSE CLEANING SERVICE

Weekly House Cleaning: 6 Reasons it Beats Monthly

Maybe you’ve been thinking about hiring a professional cleaning service for a while now. Or perhaps, Clean & Simple comes in and helps you clean once a month. But have you considered a weekly house cleaning service?

Imagine it for yourself: With a weekly house cleaning, you leave the house each Monday morning and come home to a magically clean home. The carpets have been vacuumed, the shelves have all been dusted, and the floors have been mopped. It happens every week. And you didn’t have to do any of it yourself.

A professional weekly deep-clean of your home can be beneficial for you and your family for many reasons. Let’s take a look at why you should consider a weekly or bi-weekly cleaning schedule.

1. A weekly house cleaning service keeps you accountable

If you’ve ever worked with a cleaning service before, chances are you scramble around at the last minute before the cleaning service arrives, picking everything up before they get there, so that they are able to dedicate time cleaning the things that really need to be cleaned, instead of picking up clutter. Which makes sense. But no one likes the feeling of running around right before their cleaning professionals arrive.

When you use weekly house cleaning services, it means there isn’t as much time between cleanings for things to get messy. This also means it’s a lot easier to get things picked up before we arrive to give your home a deep clean: Less time between cleanings means less clutter. You can rest easy knowing that weekly house cleanings will help you keep your home looking it’s very best more frequently.

2. It’s a weekly fresh start

There’s nothing like walking into a clean home, that’s dust-free, with vacuum marks in the carpet, and the smell of cleaning products hanging in the air. In fact, two of the most common cleaning product scents: lemon and pine, are scientifically proven to leave us feeling happier. And what makes that feeling even better? When you didn’t have to do the cleaning yourself!

Many of our clients in Edmonds prefer to have their weekly or bi-weekly house cleaning scheduled towards the beginning of the week, so that when their week starts back up, their house gets cleaned too. It’s a great way to reset each week and to have a clean home throughout the entire workweek. It’s like a little pick-me-up that provides you with an immaculate home to come home to, starting Monday evening.

3. You don’t have to worry so much about cleaning supplies

When Clean & Simple comes in for a weekly or bi-weekly cleaning, we also bring all of our own cleaning products with us. We bring the dusting spray, the glass cleaner, and the disinfectant. So while you might need a few of these things products for occasional maintenance between cleanings and kitchen clean-ups, you don’t have to keep your cleaning supply closet so well-stocked anymore.

Without a cleaning service, or even with monthly house cleaning services, you have to keep a better-stocked cabinet of cleaning supplies. This is just one way that a weekly house cleaning service can actually save you money

We are professionals. We know which cleaning supplies are the most effective, and we bring the very best cleaning products with us. You don’t have to stop quite so frequently to pick up glass cleaner, and there’s less chance of you getting caught in the middle of a cleaning spree without the proper cleaner because we do the toughest cleaning for you!

4. It’s easier to maintain than a monthly cleaning service

If you have hired a monthly cleaning service, there’s a lot that can happen in between cleanings. Dust can accumulate, and if you suffer from dust allergies, that’s a serious problem. If dust is an issue for you or your family because of allergies, you probably need to rid your home of dust every 1-2 weeks.

This means that if you have a professional cleaning service come in once per month, you would need to be responsible for any other dusting sessions or maintenance cleanings that need to happen the rest of the month.

When you hire Clean & Simple for weekly house cleaning services, or a bi-weekly cleaning service, your home stays cleaner all month long. And we take care of the nitty-gritty for you. We do the hard work (and the dusting) so you don’t have to.

5. It’s the perfect form of self-care

Hiring a weekly house cleaning service is like giving yourself a present over and over again every week. It’s the ultimate version of self-care. You get to experience the peace of mind you receive when you come home to a clean house, you take one thing off of your too-full to-do list, and you create a clean home, free of visual clutter.

Keeping a clean home means that you spend time in a space that doesn’t create extra stress for you. Clutter and mess can make us feel anxious or overwhelmed – it’s true. Clutter, mess, or dust in the corners causes extra unnecessary visual stimuli. Our homes should be a place of peace and solitude, and hiring Clean & Simple to come create that feeling for you once a week or once every other week is the perfect way to ensure your home is a stress-free haven for you and your family.

Weekly or bi-weekly house cleanings done by professionals give you more time to do the things you love, and the things that bring you joy. And what could be better for you and your family than spending more quality time together, doing what makes you the happiest instead of scrubbing and polishing?

6. It’s a better bargain than monthly cleanings

Many cleaning companies have a higher monthly cleaning service cost, and a higher fee for a one-time cleaning service. It makes sense: Far more time has passed between cleanings, and it takes more work and more time to reset your home to it’s very best with a one-time cleaning service. You’d be amazed at the level of detail work that goes into cleaning your home when you hire Clean & Simple – and it’s much easier to maintain that level of clean when we come each week.

This frequently means that many cleaning services charge more if you schedule monthly cleanings than if you schedule professionals to come in and clean once a week or every other week.

Prices can vary a lot in the house cleaning industry. Monthly cleaning services are usually not as great of a bargain as weekly house cleaning. A monthly cleaning cost or one-time cleaning cost will be much higher. Weekly house cleanings are by far a better deal.

We’ve been helping families in Edmonds keep their homes beautifully clean with weekly cleaning services and other custom services for nearly 30 years. Our clients are highly satisfied with the work that we do cleaning their homes each week, and the time it frees up for them to pursue their passions and spend time with their families. And isn’t that what it’s all about?

Request a quote today and let us help you with weekly or bi-weekly house cleanings so you have the time you need to do what you love most.

Winter Cleaning Checklist

That Winter Clean Feeling

We all know about spring cleaning—but what about winter cleaning? It tends to be wet or snowy outside, so you’re tracking in more mud than usual. You’re also spending more time in your home—with all that dust and all those germs. Maintaining a clean home in winter is incredibly important for the health and comfort of you and your family.

That’s why we’re sharing our favorite deep-cleaning tips for a winter-clean home—plus a free printable checklist!

Winter Cleaning Checklist

  1. Turn over furniture to vacuum bottoms. The undersides of furniture can be magnets for dust bunnies and other dirt, and gentle vacuuming can prevent that dust from getting into the air.
  2. Clean tops of doors, trim, and artwork/hanging photographs. There are many small horizontal surfaces in your home that trap dust, such as:
  • Interior doors
  • Trim, including baseboards and chair rails
  • Artwork and mirrors
  • Electrical wall plates
  • Wall-mounted smoke detectors, CO detectors, and thermostats
  • Upper kitchen cabinets
  • Light bulbs and light fixtures
  • Computer monitors and other electronic devices
  • Books on shelves
  1. Clean behind the fridge. Specifically, the condenser coils on the back or bottom of the refrigerator. Cleaning these can help your fridge run more efficiently, and possibly extend its life.
  • If the coils are on the back of your fridge, you will need to pull it away from the wall and unplug it while you’re working. You can brush or vacuum the coils, and then clean up any dust and dirt on the floor.
  • If the coils are underneath the fridge, you can clean them through the front bottom faceplate that covers the coils. Remove the faceplate. Clean using a brush, or a vacuum attachment designed to clean under refrigerators.
  1. Clean ceiling fan blades. Ceiling fan blades catch a ton of dust and dirt. Use an old pillowcase to clean them, trapping dust inside the pillowcase instead of knocking onto furniture (or into your eyes).
  2. Use a checklist. You can download our free Winter Cleaning Checklist here.
  3. Hire the professionals. Feeling overwhelmed at the work ahead of you? Too busy but tired of looking at the mess? Don’t forget—Clean and Simple Cleaning™ can help you with all the items on this list! If you are interested in learning more about our cleaning services and options, you can contact us through this form, or call (425)673-4733.

PARTY IDEAS

Valentines Day Party Ideas

Valentines Day is one of my favorites holidays to celebrate as I love to express my love to my family and friends.  I try to express my care every day, but a holiday to celebrate love and friendship makes me want to do it in fun and special ways.

One of the best ways to celebrate is to throw a Valentines Day Party.

Whether you are looking for ways to party with your entire family, your kids, or your friends, check out these fun Valentines Day Party ideas.

Valentines Family Dinner Party

My family tradition is to have heart shaped pancakes (to not waste any pancakes, I do half the batter pink and half normal, so I can cut the hearts and place in the opposite colored pancakes, so there aren’t any scraps that go uneaten).  We also have strawberries cut in heart shapes with whip cream and have strawberry milk with fun straws.  Placing a little love note at each place setting sets the mood for a love filled dinner.

Another family fun Valentines activity is to have each member write down something they love about each family member on a separate sheet of paper and give it to that person.  Then each person reads their slips of papers and tries to guess who wrote what.  Could also be done with a group of friends as long as everyone knows each other.

Kid’s Party with Cookie Decoration Station

Kids are always ready to party.  Some Valentine party theme ideas are hugs and kisses, super hero, mustaches, or keep it traditional simply with hearts.  I think having one big activity is the simplest way to handle a kid party and cookie (or cupcake) decorating stations are always a big hit.  They will have a blast creating their masterpiece with different colors of frosting, sprinkles, and candy available to them.  Simply add a fruit kabob (maybe even all red or in heart shapes) and a drink and you have the food covered too!  Don’t think this is a fun idea for just younger kids…your middle schoolers might surprise you.

Valentines Day Tea

Invite your girlfriends over for a wonderful Valentine’s Day Tea.  Get some friendship tea bags or just an assortment and maybe even have everyone bring their favorite tea cup.  Serve heart shaped sandwiches or special red and pink frosted cookies for a treat.  Remember the most important thing though is making time to get together and celebrate your friendship.

Dessert and Wine Party with the Girlfriends

I love to get together with my girlfriends to unwind and laugh together.  A fun way to celebrate your friendship with your best gals is to invite them over for dessert and wine.  (This could also be a great couple party too!)  If you are a baker, go for it and make your specialty.  If not, ask everyone to bring a dessert tray or simply order a few options from your favorite bakery.  Offer a variety of wines and let the fun begin.

Throwing a party to celebrate the love and friendship you have for your family and friends is a perfect way to celebrate Valentines Day.  Let us know with a comment if you use any of these party ideas or if you have a party idea to share.

Removing stains with Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide spray is one of our most versatile green cleaning products. It is a powerful disinfectant and brightens dull and stained surfaces. It’s also much gentler than bleach so there’s no risk of damage or discoloration. Peroxide leaves a light and refreshing clean scent, as opposed to the strong fumes that bleach produces.

How Clean and Simple uses hydrogen peroxide in your home

Our teams use their Betco Green Earth® Peroxide Cleaner for a variety of tasks throughout the entire home.

In the bathroom, we use hydrogen peroxide cleaner to:

– Brighten dull grout and remove mold and other stains
– Disinfect all surfaces
– Remove soap scum from tile, porcelain, glass, and metal fixtures

In the kitchen, we use peroxide cleaner to:

– Disinfect counter tops, refrigerator door handles, microwave interiors and more
– Clean tile, linoleum, and some laminate floors

How does it work?

Hydrogen peroxide is the water molecule with one extra oxygen atom. This extra oxygen makes the product an oxidizer, which means it can break down other compounds. In the case of hydrogen peroxide, this is what makes it useful to remove soap scum and as a disinfectant. It also means that hydrogen peroxide decomposes into oxygen and water, which makes it an environmentally friendly cleaning product.

According to the CDC, hydrogen peroxide can kill a wide range of bacteria, yeasts, fungi, viruses and spores.

7 Household uses for hydrogen peroxide

You can use hydrogen peroxide cleaner for several household tasks (though it isn’t recommended to treat cuts and scrapes anymore – it can slow healing time and lead to other complications)

1. Sanitize cutting boards

You should do this regularly with all cutting boards, but especially those made of wood and other porous materials. Spray the cutting board with peroxide cleaner. Let it sit for five minutes and then wipe off with a clean cloth.

2. Remove stains from marble

Unsealed marble stains very easily, and those stains can be difficult to remove. Try this method: mix hydrogen peroxide and flour to create a paste. Apply this paste to the stain and cover with plastic wrap. Let sit overnight, and then wash off the next morning. You might need to repeat this process a few times to completely remove the stain.
Note: test your flour/peroxide paste on a small inconspicuous area first

3. Use in place of bleach in your laundry

Pour a cup of hydrogen peroxide in with whites to remove stains (also works well to remove the musty scent from towels). Let sit 10-15 minutes before starting the machine.

4. Use as a fruit and veggie wash

Remove dirt and pesticides from produce by adding ¼ cup of hydrogen peroxide to a full sink of cold water. Wash produce in the sink and then rinse with cold water.

5. Boost disinfecting power of dish soap and detergent

Add about 2 ounces of hydrogen peroxide to your bottle of dish detergent or soap to disinfect dishes when you wash them.

6. Disinfect sponges

Disinfect kitchen sponges by soaking them in a 50/50 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and warm water for ten minutes. Rinse thoroughly after soaking.

7. Keep fungus off indoor plants

Add a small amount of hydrogen peroxide to water in spray bottle and lightly mist plant leaves. This can help reduce possibility of fungus on plant leaves.

Removing Grease From Your Home

Removing stubborn grease from your home

Many of us are spending more time than ever in our kitchens. Maybe you’ve always loved to cook, or maybe you are enjoying a newfound hobby. No matter what, none of us like the inevitable by-product of home cooking – grease. Grease is one of the most stubborn soils to remove, which is why we employ a selection of products to combat grease in our clients’ homes.

How Clean and Simple cleans grease in your home

Our teams have a range of products to clean grease – from our gentler (but still effective!) green cleaner BETCO Green Earth Degreaser, to the simple dish soap and water (multipurpose and always gives great results), to more powerful cleaners like Formula 409 All Purpose Cleaner.

Dish soap and warm water make a super effective team in tackling all sorts of soils in your home, but especially grease. Our technicians start every kitchen cleaning by making a bucket of soap and warm water. They use this bucket throughout the cleaning to remove grease with a soft but strong microfiber scrubbing cloth. The benefit to soap and water, besides the fact that it works well, is that it is also safe on many different types of surfaces, without the risk of discoloration or other damage from spray cleaners (yes, even green ones!).

For tougher grease, the technician will spray a surface with Green Earth degreaser, and then work on another task while the degreaser does its work breaking down grease. After 5-10 minutes, the technician comes back and wipes up the grease with soap and warm water. This technique is most frequently used in microwaves and on stove tops, backsplashes, and vent hoods.

If we’re in your home for the first time, you might have a little more grease build-up in certain areas. No worries! We have the tools for that too. For one time and initial cleanings, our teams often use Formula 409 cleaner to break up heavier grease. This cleaner is stronger than the Green Earth degreaser, but it is still safe to use around kids, pets, and food preparation areas.
Finally, sometimes grease has built up for years, or is extra baked on. These jobs usually require some extra time scouring. Oven interiors can benefit from Easy-Off oven cleaner. This is a powerful cleaner, so we are careful to use it only on appropriate surfaces and with all the required safety precautions. Often bad grease build-up takes consistent cleaning over time to fully remove.

The frustrating thing about grease is that the best way to handle it is to prevent it from getting bad in the first place. But that’s why we’re here. We’ll make quick work of the grease in your home, so you can focus on the cooking.

7 Steps you can take to prevent or tackle grease in your home:

  1. Wipe down your stovetop after each use. Yes, every time. This is really your best bet for battling grease. Make it part of your clean up routine after mealtimes, and grease won’t ever have the chance to build up.
  2. Dish soap can be highly effective at removing grease. It’s formulated to remove greasy food residue from dishes and will work well at the same task on your stovetop or microwave.
  3. Citrus oils help break grease down. Adding orange essential oils to your dish soap and water not only makes it smell great – it can make cleaning a little easier too.
  4. For recent grease spills, sprinkling flour over the spill can help clean the mess. It might seem counterintuitive (won’t it make the mess worse?), but the flour will absorb the grease, which makes it easier to see and to wipe up.
  5. Baking soda and water can help remove grease from pots and pans. Baking soda is alkali, which means it is effective at breaking down grease. Pour a little water and a sprinkle of baking soda (or a little bit of soda water) in a warm pan after use. After soaking, grease clean up will be so much easier.
  6. Use salt and rubbing alcohol to remove grease from fabrics. This is especially useful for fabrics you can’t through into the washing machine (rugs, couches, etc.). Mix four parts rubbing alcohol and one part salt together. Use a clean cloth to scrub mixture into the stain. You’ll need to scrub hard! After the stain is removed, let the spot dry, and then use a vacuum to vacuum up any salt.
  7. Have Clean and Simple Cleaning™ out on a regular basis for home cleaning. If the best way to handle grease is cleaning frequently, a cleaning service can be essential for busy families. Call us today to set up a plan that works for you!
